Primary Oral Malignant Melanoma

Abstract: Malignant melanoma of the oral cavity is a rare neoplasm. It is well known for his poor prognosis and the need for an evidence-based treatment. Therapy is commonly based on surgical excision of the primary tumour, supplemented by adjuvant therapy. In this paper two new cases of primary oral melanoma are reported with a review of the literature.

Although most melanomas arise in the skin, they may also arise from mucosal surfaces or at other sites wherein neural crest cells migrate (1, 2).…”

“…Oral malignant melanomas are extremely rare lesions and occur commonly in the maxillary gingival and palatal region. Malignant melanoma is the third most common skin malignancy, yet it comprises of only 3 to 5% of all cutaneous malignancies (Boulaadas et al, 2007). Malignant melanomas of the oral cavity are extremely rare accounting for 0.2-8% of all malignant melanomas (Ebenezer, 2006;Guevara-Canales et al, 2012).…”

“…However, human OMMs are also aggressive rapidly growing, invasive tumours that display metastatic rates of 66% (regional lymph nodes 22 ), 53% (lung 23 ), 36% (bone 23 ), and 20% (liver and brain 23 ), respectively. The 5-year survival rate is 15–25% 22,24 . Advanced human mucosal melanoma also has a low rate of response to adjuvant chemotherapy 25 .…”
