Primary Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma Arising from Ectopic Salivary Tissue within an Intraparotid Lymph Node

Abstract: Ectopic salivary tissue is commonly found in intraparotid and periparotid lymph nodes. Warthin tumor is the most common tumor arising in ectopic salivary gland tissue and in intraparotid lymph nodes. Although rare, neoplastic transformation of the ectopic salivary tissues is conceivable and other types of salivary gland neoplasms arising in intraparotid lymph nodes have been reported. Herein we report a rare case of a 32-year-old Kuwaiti male who presented with a mass in the right parotid gland. A preoperative… Show more

“…The occurrence of salivary tissue neoplasm within ectopic salivary gland tissue is rare, with 80% of HSGT tumors being benign [20] . However, neoplasm has been reported in intraparotid and cervical lymph nodes [21] . Most tongue base tumors arise from the mucosa and are squamous cell carcinoma.…”

“…Although rare, malignant transformation of the ectopic salivary tissues is possible. In literature there are few reports of salivary malignant tumor developing primarily in intraparotid lymphnodes [22][23][24][25] including rare AciCC [26][27][28]. The main diagnostic issue in this rare setting is excluding a nodal metastasis form a salivary gland primary.…”
