Primary Intraocular Lymphoma Mimicking Late Postoperative Endophthalmitis

Abstract: We treated a 65-year old woman with diffuse uveitis and an intraocular mass. The diffuse uveitis resolved with the administration of corticosteroids, but the intraocular mass did not respond to treatment. A transscleral biopsy of the lesion was performed. Histophathological study revealed non-Hodgkin’s large-cell lymphoma. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that the tumor cells were derived from B-cells. The intraocular mass diminished after radiation therapy. The transscleral biopsy proved useful in establis… Show more

“…The clinical course is often one of chronic uveitis that becomes poorly responsive to steroid therapy after an initial regression of the intraocular lesions (frequently mistaken as idiopathic uveitis due to its initial good response to corticosteroids) [5, 14, 15, 16]. Because of the nonspecific clinical findings, intraocular lymphoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any posterior uveitis in middle-aged individuals.…”

“…[35][36][37][38][39][40] Fine-needle aspiration of intraocular mass lesions has been performed and can yield successful results. [41][42][43] Typically, chorioretinal biopsies and enucleated eyes demonstrate neoplastic cells between the RPE and Bruch's membrane.…”
