PRIMARY CUTANEOUS IgA PLASMACYTOMA

Abstract: Clinical, laboratory and pathologic findings from a case of IgA (λ‐type) secreting extramedullary plasmacytoma of the skin are presented. The tumors were found first in the skin of the right upper extremity and then in the left maxillary sinus one year later. Materials were examined by peroxidase‐anti peroxidase method (PAP method) and the immunofluorescence method.

“…6,13,21 Risk factors for a poor prognosis include multiple lesions, tumor size > 5 cm, IgA-secreting tumors, and a compromised immune system. 5,18,21 Tsuboi et al 22 found intralesional tumor necrosis factor-a reduced tumor size in a patient with multiple cutaneous plasmacytomas; however, lesion size did not change after the fourth injection. Oral cyclophosphamide and prednisolone were used subsequently, which reduced the tumor size and recurrence.…”

“…The average age of onset is 60.8 years (range: 16–88 years), and the male : female ratio is 4 : 1 . The prognosis is worse in patients presenting with multiple skin lesions, large lesion size, and immunoglobulin A (IgA)‐secreting tumors . Disease‐related mortality is at least 40%, and long‐term follow‐up indicates that more than half of patients relapse or progress to myelomatosis …”
