Preventive Effects of 80% Ethanol Extracts of the Edible Mushroom Hypsizigus marmoreus on Mouse Type IV Allergy

Abstract: We investigated the active components responsible for the anti-allergic effect of Hypsizigus marmoreus on an oxazolone-induced type IV allergy in male ICR mice. Following both an oral administration at a dose of 250 mg/kg body weight and percutaneous administration at 0.10 mg/ear, significant anti-allergic activities were found in the 80% ethanolsoluble fraction (Fr. 1), and the low molecular weight fraction (Fr. 2, below a molecular weight of ca. 12000; Fr. 4, below ca. 3000) prepared from Fr. 1. These fracti… Show more

“…Besides the nutritional properties Manzi, Aguzzi, & Pizzoferrato, 2001), mushrooms have been demonstrated to possess healthy properties (Lindequist, Niedermeyer, & Julich, 2005) and they have proved to be effective as antiinflammatory, antitumour, antibacterial, antioxidant and antiviral agents Chen, Wang, & Wu, 2009;Dore et al, 2007;Faccin et al, 2007;; furthermore, they show antiallergic, antiatherogenic, hypoglycemic and haematological properties Hossain et al, 2003;Yoshino et al, 2008); and they are involved in immunomodulating therapies (Wasser, 2002). Among the biologically active substances present in mushrooms, phenolics have attracted much attention due to their superb properties as antioxidant, antiinflammatory or antitumour agents, among others (Puttaraju, Venkateshaiah, Dharmesh, Urs, & Somasundaram, 2006).…”

“…16,17) Previously, we reported that administration of the ethanol extract from Hypsizigus marmoreus enhanced antioxidative activities in mouse plasma and prevented mouse type IV allergy. 5,6) The enhancement of the serum antioxidative activities in mice administered the saccharified rice solution may contribute to the antiallergic effects. Further investigations are nec- essary to clarify the mechanisms responsible for the serum antioxidative activities induced by administration of the saccharified rice solution.…”

“…Typical symptoms of type IV allergy are contact dermatitis, while asthma and pollinosis are typical of type I allergy. We previously reported the suppressive effects of some natural products, such as methylated catechins in tea (Camellia sinensis L.) [1][2][3] and the ethanol extracts prepared from an edible mushroom (Hypsizigus marmoreus), [4][5][6] on mouse type IV and type I allergic models. These foods may be available to prevent allergies.…”

“…This species can also be defined as a type of medicinal mushroom, since several medicinal compounds have been isolated from its fruit body and mycelia . Furthermore, various extracts from H. marmoreus fruiting bodies have been investigated, and these are reported to exhibit several kinds of biological activities such as antioxidant, cancer preventive, antitubercular, and anti‐allergic activities . It has been reported that the polysaccharides from H. marmoreus possess antitumor properties and exert inhibitory effects on cancer cell growth …”
