When not acting in ways that are recognised as physicalself-defence, women are often – in psychology and inother dominant discourses – generalised as inherentlypassive during subjection to sexualised coercion (rapeand attempted rape). Likewise, in the aftermaths, their(in)actions are frequently pathologised as ‘maladaptivecoping strategies’.We present theoretically and empirically based argumentsfor an agency-oriented approach to women’sperspectives on sexualised coercion. Agency is understoodas intentional, situated and strategic. Sexualisedcoercion is not generalised as a single “traumatic”event, but conceptualised as life events. Meanings ofcoercion are embedded in social activities connectedto discourses on ‘rape’ and ‘trauma’. Thus personalmeanings of subjection are understood as developed inand through participation in trajectories across diversecontexts.Adopted in our study, this approach points to thegreat diversity of personal meanings of sexualised coercion.Moreover, it reveals intimate connections betweensituated, personal and dominant discursive meanings ofcoercion, and women’s strategies of (in)actions duringand in the aftermaths of the events.Our analysis of participants’ perspectives also indicatesan imperative need for reinterpreting conceptssuch as ‘victim’ and ‘passivity’. In a reinterpretationwomen, although subjected to sexualised coercion,emerge as subjects both during subjection and in theaftermaths. Furthermore their seemingly pathologicalbehaviour may be re-conceptualised as personally sense-making strategies of action in reflected attemptsat (re)formulating and (re)organising their lifestrategies.

Empirisk trækker artiklen på en undersøgelse af personlige perspektiver hos kvinder, der har henvendt sig til Rigshospitalets Center for Voldtægtsofre. Kønnetheden ved personlige og almene samfundsmæssige aspekter af seksualiserede overgrebs betydninger undersøges oftest ikke eksplicit i psykologien. Ligeledes udelades eller fordrejes kønnetheden tit i folkepsykologiske diskurser om emnet. Derfor ønsker vi at undersøge, hvorledes betydninger af køn, magt og deltagelse er relaterede i de almene og personlige betydninger dette psykosociale problem får. Det vil sige, at vi bidrager til undersøgelsen af: 1) Det relative kønsdominans-undertrykkelsesforhold og dets forbindelse til risikoen for, at kvinder bliver udsat for seksualiserede overgreb. 2) Risikoens betydninger for kvinder, samt 3) De betydninger konkrete overgreb og de konkrete, situerede udformninger af almene samfundsmæssige betingelser kan få for de kvinder, der udsætte for dem. Analysen peger bl.a. på, at betingelserne kan indgå i »onde cirkler «, der udbygger den afmagt, kvinderne udsættes for i og med selve overgrebet. Analysen fremhæver således nødvendigheden af at begribe forholdet mellem køn, overgreb, deltagelsesmuligheder og (dis)empowerment. Således kan den undgå at bidrage til de »onde cirkler« gennem individualiseringer og patologiseringer af de berørte, hvilket også vil sige at bidrage til disempowerment. Analysen kan derimod bidrage til de udsatte kvinders empowerment i form af bl.a. mere inkluderende støtteinitiativer, der fremmer kvinders individuelle og kollektive muligheder for at overskue, kontrollere og håndtere forskellige slags ressourcer.

Putting together this Reader took us more than three years and the project would not have been successful without the intensive work and support of many people.First of all we would like to thank the authors of this book for their stimulating and elaborate contributions and for their patience during the production process of the book, somewhat lengthened by the finalisation of the English versions of the chapters written in French or German.The dedication and hard work of Renate Klein and Carol Hagemann-White in building up and organizing European research networks on VAW were central in the international cooperation that led to this Reader. Without their network activities, bringing the three of us together and giving us the opportunity to discuss the theme of gender, violence and ethnicity/discrimination, this project would never have launched.We would also like to thank our publisher, Barbara Budrich, and her team for their support during this project and for their patience whilst awaiting the full manuscript, never placing pressure on us nor losing faith that one day the Reader would be completed.WAVE was another important European partner for this Reader, as Rosa Logar, Maria Rösslhumer and Felice Drott helped us in searching for funding for translations and in preparing a framework for the dissemination of the contents of this book during the annual WAVE conference in October 2011.
