An experiment was carried out to investigate whether nicotine ingestion (via cigarette smoking) interacted with alcohol (vodka and tonic) in its effect on state-dependent learning (SDL) in humans. On Day 1 of the 2-day experiment 24 subjects were required to learn a simple route map previously found to be SDL sensitive with alcohol. All subjects ingested 0.66 g alcohol/kg body wt. and smoked two medium tar cigarettes (average nicotine content 1.4 mg). Twenty-four hours later, subjects attempted recall under one of the following drug states; (i) alcohol and nicotine (A + N); (ii) alcohol and smoking placebo (A + O); (iii) Nicotine and placebo drink (O + N); and (iv) no drugs (O + O). Highest recall scores were observed in the A + N subjects, with O + N and O + O subjects recalling the least. A + O subjects had intermediate recall performance. Thus the combination did produce a clear SDL effect, with alcohol possibly contributing the major influence.

1 Behavioural effects of occupational exposure to vapour from styrene-based resin were investigated in 10 female workers with a portable test of choice reaction time. Testing was carried out both at the beginning and end of the day's shift. 2 Uptake and metabolism of styrene were assessed by monitoring post-shift urinary mandelic acid excretion rates. By using these data workers were allocated to three groups reflecting zero, low )r high exposure. 3 After exposure slowing of reaction times was found in those with the highest mandelic acid excretion rates, whereas a slight improvement or no change was found in those with low or zero exposure. 4 Subsequent improvements in extraction and ventilation in the workroom were shown to be associated with both decreased mandelic acid excretion and absence of long reaction times in those previously most heavily exposed.

The pathogenetic mechanisms of acute alcoholic intoxications are examined and is based the expediency of the search for the amethystic agents, which influence neurotransmitter systems. Promising should be considered the agents, which modulate GABA-systems (partial reverse agonists of benzodiazepine receptors), glutamate (antagonists of metabotropic receptors mGluR2/3), opioid neuropeptides (antagonists of opioid receptors), acetylcholine (reversible inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase and M-cholinoagonists), adenosine (selective antagonists of A -receptors). The amethystic effect manifest also the substances, which modify the second messengers systems (calcium, nitrergic and cascade of arachidonic acid). The most of the means examined possesses the moderate amethystic potential, and effectiveness is manifested predominantly during the preventive application.
