Prevalência de infecção chagásica em doadores de sangue do Hemocentro Regional de Iguatu, CE

Abstract: The objective of this study is to evaluate the frequency of Trypanosoma cruzi infection among blood donors at the Iguatu Regional Hemocenter, CE, 1996 - 1997, using the Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and hemagglutination passive reverse (HPR) tests. Of the 3,232 donors analyzed a total of 61 (1.9%) were seropositive for chagasic infection. The greatest number of infected donors was found in the 41-50 year age group, while the majority of donors were in the 18-30 year age group. Of the total number o… Show more

“…This profile was different from that found by SOBREIRA et al (2001) 16 at the Iguatu Blood Center (CE), where most donors were 18 to 30 years old. The prevalence of donors older than 50 years in a historically endemic area region for Chagas disease is a reason for alert to the blood center, considering that the majority of contaminated individuals were in that age range, as control campaigns became actually significant in the 1970s.…”

“…If one does not take into account cost, reorganization of blood center routine and preoccupation with other infectious agents, many studies defend the use of more than one technique for a safe serological triage in blood centers [18,[25][26][27][28].…”

“…As for the prevalence of VDRL, HTLV and T. cruzi, most of the studies from other Brazilian blood banks showed more elevated figures Dourado et al, 2003;Sobreira et al, 2001;Melo et al, 2009;Moraes-Souza et al, 2006;Martins et al, 2009).…”
