Objectives: The current study was conducted to reveal the prevalence and causes of traumatic dental injuries to permanent anterior teeth among mixed dentition of schoolchildren in Sana'a City, Yemen. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 1252 schoolchildren aged 7-12 years in three districts of Sana'a city, Yemen. They numbered 700 males and 552 females from 26 randomly selected public and private schools. Clinical examination of permanent anterior teeth was done according to the classification of Ellis modified by Fried. Results: Prevalence of TDI was 10.30%, with a male ratio of 4.8: female 1, (P <0.05). Most of the children suffered only one damage to the tooth and most of them are in the maxillary central incisors. The TDI increased with older age (10-12 years old) (16.5%) with odds ratio 4.8, (p<0.05). Regarding the site of trauma, most injuries happened in males on the street (44.9%) while in females happened at home (31.81%) and falls were the main cause of TDI. In both sexes, the most common type of injury was class I (enamel fracture) followed by class II (enamel and dentine without pulp involvement). Conclusion: In conclusion, the prevalence of TDI in permanent anterior teeth among mixed dentition of school children in Sana’a was high, higher in males than in females, with a peak age of 10 to 12 years, falls was the common cause, and occurred mostly on the street for boys and home for females. Accordingly, educational programs should be developed that focus on ways to prevent dental trauma and the benefits of seeking urgent treatment to maintain avulsed and fractured teeth. Introduction: Study of traumatic dental injuries (TDI);a common dental emergencycan facilitate planning of preventive measures, better assessment and carry out treatment effectively. Objective: To determine the gender and age difference in TDIs, etiology, intra-oral soft-tissue and bony injuries, types of tooth fractures and luxation injuries. Also to find out the association between the type of TDI and malocclusion, overjet and lip competency.Materials & Method: This cross-sectional study comprised of 121 patients with the history of TDI. Thorough history and clinical examination was done and data were statistically analyzed (confidence interval of 95% and statistical significance set at p≤0.05).Result: Males were more prone to injuries with a male-to-female ratio of 1.5:1. Fall and road traffic accidents were the most common cause of injuries and males were more prone to injuries due to fall (p=0.047). The main etiologies of TDIs were fall and RTA in children and adults respectively. Children had more luxation injuries, while adults had more tooth fractures. Permanent maxillary central incisors were most common to sustain tooth fracture and enamel-dentin fracture were the most common types of injuries. No statistically significant association was found between overjet and tooth fractures (p=0.19), luxation injuries (p=0.24), softtissue injuries and bony injuries (p=0.42). Similarly, no significant association was found between lip competency and dental injuries.Conclusion: Cohort studies must be conducted to associate risk factors and TDIs.

Background/Aim Dental trauma causes significant aesthetic, functional and psychosocial problems that often require emergency attention in children. The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the factors related to dental injuries in children. A secondary aim was to better understand how to improve the education given to children, parents and teachers in schools regarding dental trauma. Materials and methods Records of children who were referred to the Department of Pedodontics at Suleyman Demirel University were reviewed. A total of 1971 patients with a history of dental trauma who attended the clinic from 1999 to 2017 were evaluated. The following information was recorded: age, gender, year, aetiology, location, season and time elapsed after trauma. Results were evaluated using the Pearson chi‑square test. Results The patients’ average age was 8.56 ± 0.08. Dental injuries were frequent in the 7‐ to 12‐year age group (55.9%). Children in the 0‐ to 6‐year age group attended the clinic more frequently during the years 2013 and 2017 compared to previous years. Boys had a higher frequency of trauma than girls (P < 0.05). The most frequent cause of trauma was falls (46%). The accidents occurred predominantly in the street (41.8%). Trauma that took place at home increased in the later years of the study period, whereas the percentage of injuries occurring in schools decreased. The ratio of patients who attended the clinic within the first two days after trauma was 33.4% between 1999 and 2007, and this increased to 59.8% between 2013 and 2017. The majority of the injuries occurred during the summer. Conclusions The aetiological factors related to trauma in children, and the number of patients who attended the clinic, have not changed over the 18‐year period but the elapsed time to attend the clinic has changed. Education will increase the awareness regarding the importance of emergency intervention immediately following dental trauma.
