Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge, attitude, and practice towards dengue prevention among students at Tan Sri Mustaffa Babjee College, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Method: An analytical cross-sectional survey was performed with 214 respondents from Tan Sri Mustaffa Babjee College residents using a simple random sampling method. A self-administered validated questionnaire was distributed to respondents through student email and Whatsapp phone application. The acquired data was then analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences Software (SPSS) Version 27. Results: The majority of the students had moderate knowledge (17.14 ± 2.510), attitude (30.69 ± 4.065) and practice (7.97 ± 2.224) towards dengue prevention. The year of study was the only sociodemographic characteristic that had a significant association with knowledge (χ2= 18.288, P = 0.013), attitude (χ2= 18.526, P = 0.010) and practice (χ2= 19.194, P = 0.014) of dengue prevention, while the factor of the study programme (χ2= 31.599, P = 0.002) were found to have significantly associated with the level of knowledge. Conclusion: There was a significant association between dengue prevention knowledge and practice (χ2= 11.838, P = 0.019), but no significant association between knowledge and attitude, as well as practice and attitude. College management should organize and regularly implement the dengue control activities that focus on both preventive action and expanding awareness of dengue prevention to ensure lifetime action and effective methods in controlling dengue.

Background Smoking and consuming alcohol remain hazardous acts to health, which are important to prevent in adolescents. Prosocial behavior has increasingly being noticed to be related with substance use. This study investigated the association between the trying of smoking and alcohol with prosocial behavior among school-going adolescents in Terengganu, Malaysia. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among 732 school adolescents aged between 13 and 18 years from 12 secondary schools in Terengganu. Cluster sampling was applied. A validated questionnaire adopted from Global Health School Survey (GSHS) was used and prosocial behavior was assessed using the validated Malay self-rated version of Strength and Difficulty Questionnaire (SDQ). Data were analyzed using SPSS ver25, using multiple logistic regressions for both dependent variables of ever smoking and ever alcohol drinking. Results Ever smoking was significantly inversely associated with prosocial behavior (p = 0.010, OR: 0.84, CI: 0.74, 0.96); together with other significantly associated factors; namely older age, male gender, poorer family income, and smoking in immediate family members. However, there was no association of the between prosocial behavior with ever alcohol drinking (p = 0.628). Conclusion Prosocial behavior is negatively associated with the trying of smoking in adolescents. Future longitudinal study should be done to investigate the effects of promoting prosocial behavior among adolescents towards the hazardous act.

The Prevalence of Psychoactive Substance use and related factors among Delta State University, Students

The use of psychoactive substances is becoming more common in many African countries. In Nigeria, a significant portion of the national budgetary welfare funding is used for the care and recovery of individuals with drug abuse issues. The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence of psychoactive drug use and the factors that influence it among undergraduate students of Delta State University, Abraka using descriptive cross-sectional study design. For this study, a self-administered pretested questionnaire was used. The questionnaire was developed from review of relevant literature and study tools by adhering to the main aim of the study. The majority of respondents, 225(58.3%), said that they had heard of psychoactive drugs, while 42(11%) said that they had no idea what they were. Majority of the respondents got information about psychoactive substance from the media 209(54.3%). Marijuana and SK were the most common psychoactive drugs known to respondents, with frequencies of 225(58.3%) and 118(30.7%), respectively. The majority of students cited improving academic achievement as a justification for using psychoactive substances 332(86.3%). According to the findings of the survey, a greater percentage of the undergraduates who took part in the study admitted to using psychoactive drugs. The most common cause that predisposes students to drug use is the need to improve their academic performance. The research also revealed that weed and SK were the most commonly abused psychoactive drugs by undergraduates. The rate of use of psychoactive substances among university students is disturbing and needs immediate attention.
