Background: Pressure ulcers are common problems in healthcare system and produce a significant burden on patients and care providers. Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcers is a leading cause of preventable harm. It is associated with a significant increase in treatment cost, length of stay, and poor patients' satisfaction. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of implementing educational program about pressure ulcer control on nurses' knowledge and safety of immobilized patients.Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used to conduct the study on 40 nurses working in the critical care units at Mansoura University Hospital, in addition to 40 patients were randomly assigned from these units previous. A structured questionnaire to collect data related to socio-demographic data for nurses, pressure ulcer nurses' knowledge questionnaires, observational checklist and patient assessment sheet that include Sciodemographic data related to patients, and Braden scale sheet.Results: The present study revealed that: (a) The mean total knowledge scores of nurses were increased immediately after implementation of a program with statistical significant difference compared to pre implementation. (b) The mean total practice scores of nurses were higher immediately after implementing program with a higher statistical significant difference compared to pre implementation. (c) There were a positive correlation between nurses' knowledge and practices with a high statistical significant difference. (d) There were a positive safety immobilized patients as evidence by less incidence of pressure ulcers among study group after received intervention than pre received intervention.Conclusion: This study revealed that nursing staffs' knowledge and practice about pressure ulcer preventive measures could be improved. Participants in the study reported that they could use the educational program effectively and easily in the prevention of pressure ulcers among their immobilized patients, which decreases the occurrence of pressure ulcers and as well as improved patient outcome.Recommendations: The present study recommended that continues education and in service training program for the nursing staff, which is necessary for the continuously advancing care for patients in this area.

Bakgrunn: Trykksår (TS) er en hyppig, men unngåelig, hendelse med alvorlige konsekvenser for pasientens helse og velvaere og som medfører økte helseutgifter. Data om TS-prevalens i norske sykehus er meget begrenset.Hensikt: Hensikten med denne pilotstudien var å kartlegge TS-prevalens, alvorlighetsgrad og forebyggende tiltak med en standardisert metode utviklet av European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP). Metode:Fire team av to syke pleiere undersøkte 85 pasienter 15 år på registreringsdøgnet på fire sengeposter på et universitetssykehus. Hver pasient ble undersøkt og TS gradert med EPUAPs trykksår-klassifikasjonssystem. EPUAP datasamlingsskjema ble benyttet og omfatter generelle data, kliniske data, Braden Skala (BS) for risikovurdering, hudobservasjon, og forebyggende tiltak i seng og stol.Hovedresultat: TS-prevalensen var 17,6 prosent inkludert grad 1 og 7,1 prosent inkludert kun grad 2-4. Den hyppigste lokalisasjon var haeler, dernest korsbenet. Av pasientene med behov for forebygging (dvs. BS<17 eller hadde TS) manglet 37,5 prosent trykkavlastende madrass i seng, 90 prosent var uten trykkavlastning i stol og ingen hadde planlagt stillingsendring i seng eller stol.Konklusjon: TS-prevalensen på 17,6 prosent er sammenlignbar med prevalensen i andre sykehus. Et betydelig antall pasienter fikk inadekvat forebygging. Resultatene tyder på at TS-registrering i norske sykehus er påkrevet og kan bidra til forbedring av pasientbehandlingen. Hva tilfører artikkelen?Funnene i artikkelen tyder på at det er behov for økt oppmerksomhet på forebyggende tiltak for å forhindre at pasienter får trykksår.

Malnutrition -as a fundamental aspect both in genesis as in healing of pressure ulcers -is the object of this update paper. Countless studies point out that malnutrition, immune function alterations, hypoalbuminemia, low hemoglobin levels, as well as low diet intake, as responsible for an increase in the risk of developing these lesions. Therefore, it is essential to include the assessment of the nutrition status -monitoring of the calorie-protein intake and the difficulties to use the nutrients -in the prevention and treatment protocols of this type of chronic wound. É, portanto, fundamental incluir a avaliação do estado nutricional -monitorização da ingestão calórico-protéica e das dificuldades para o aproveitamento dos nutrientes -nos protocolos de prevenção e tratamento desse tipo de ferida crônica. Muchos estudios destacan la desnutrición, los cambios del funcionamiento imunológico, la hipoalbuminemia, los bajos niveles de hemoglobina así como la baja aceptación alimentaria como los responsables del aumento del riesgo para el desarrollo de las UP. En conclusión, es fundamental incluir la evaluación del estado nutricional en los protocolos de prevención y tratamiento de las UP. Esa evaluación debe incluir medidas objetivas, seguimiento de la ingestión calórica y protéica y además de las dificultades para el aprovechamiento de los nutrientes.
