Prevalence of transfusion transmitted virus (TTV) genotypes among HCC patients in Qaluobia governorate

Abstract: Background: Transfusion Transmitted virus (TTV) is a novel single-stranded DNA virus that was identified in patients with post-transfusion hepatitis of non-A-G type. Clinical significance of TTV infection was analyzed in Egyptian hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. The present study attempted to clarify these issues in Egypt, particularly in Qaluobia governorate, a country known for its high endemicity of liver disease and hepatotropic viruses.

“…The results showed that TTV infection did not cause severe liver damage in two groups of hepatitis patients and healthy group. This was indicated by a very moderate elevation in ALT level in the disease groups, which in cirrhotic patients due to HCV showed a high ALT level than those of chronic liver disease due to HBV and HCV (31). While reviewing our findings in reference to various other studies, we found that our data are in agreement with several other reports.…”

“…The Torque teno transfusion-transmitted circoviruses are widely spread worldwide [76,140,404,423]. These agents emerge as the inducers of anti-DNA auto-antibodies and as the causative agents of "idiopathic" inflammatory myositis [35,121,122].…”

“…TTV is an ubiquitous virus revealed in more than 50% of the general human population throughout the world [ 4 - 6 ] and nearly 90% of pongid populations [ 7 ]. Co-infection of single individuals with TTV isolates belonging to one or several phylogenetic groups occurs frequently [ 8 ].…”

“…TTV has been suggested to be a causative agent of several diseases such as acute respiratory diseases [ 16 ], liver diseases [ 5 , 6 ], AIDS [ 17 ] and cancer [ 18 ], however, without any convincing support. One of current hypothesis suggests a key role of TTV in development of autoimmune reactions [ 19 ].…”
