Prevalence of sarcopenia in older Brazilians: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Sarcopenia is an emerging public health issue in Brazil. Attention should be paid to changes in prevalence rates over the next years because of the increase in the older population. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2017; 17: 5-16.

“…Muscle function, a key indicator of sarcopaenia using the EWGSOP recommendation,5 was not assessed in our study. However, a recent meta‐analysis in a Brazilian population did not find significant difference for the prevalence of sarcopaenia using muscle mass and function criteria (EWGSOP) or muscle mass alone (Baumgartner's criteria) 40. The low number of patients and the missing data, though taken into account in the statistic models, could be insufficient to exclude an effect of TCZ on cardiometabolic profile.…”

“…However, the criteria identified the absence of sarcopenia in a similar manner. A recent meta-analysis 3 with Brazilians of age reported that sarcopenia prevalence did not change with the use of diagnostic criteria recommended by EWGSOP (16%) or by measuring only muscle mass with DEXA and Baumgartner's criteria (17%). In this context, exceptionally in an older population very debilitated and unable to perform functional assessments, analysis of muscle mass as the sole criterion for generically identifying sarcopenic individuals may be too specific.…”

“…It is estimated that, after arriving in their 50s, there is annual loss of 1% in muscle mass, 2% in walking speed and from 1.9 to 5.0% in handgrip strength. This reduction in muscle mass affects about 20% of women 3 . However, although it is currently quite a studied topic, there is still no widely accepted consensus in the literature regarding its diagnostic criteria 4,5 .…”

“…2 The incidence of sarcopenia rises with aging and its prevalence is markedly increased in older adults. 5 In these patients, sarcopenia is considered primary, once this occurs in response to the myriad of physiological alterations associated with aging process (e.g., inflammation, oxidative stress). The most concern about sarcopenia is…”
