Prevalence of oral lichen planus in diabetes mellitus according to the type of diabetes

Abstract: OBJECTIVE The purpose of the present study was to determine the prevalence of oral lichen planus (OLP) in a population of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) as compared with a control population. DESIGN: A clinicopathologic study. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: One hundred and thirty‐nine patients with type I DM, 353 patients with type II DM and 274 controls were examined for clinical evidence of OLP. The clinical evidence of OLP in the diabetic and control patients was confirmed by histopathological examination. RES… Show more

“…In the oral cavity, manifestations of diabetes can include a dry or burning mouth, periodontal diseases, bone loss, dental abscesses, fungal and bacterial infections, oral lichen planus and delayed wound healing. 1,2 Immunoglobulin A (IgA) and immunoglobulin G affect oral cavity microorganisms in the saliva, gingival sulcular fluid and plasma. 3 These antibodies prevent bacterial metabolism and adhesion of microorganisms to the oral tissue.…”

“…Several studies have sought to determine salivary flow rates and components that can affect the progression, symptoms and varieties of oral changes in diabetic patients. 1,2,5 Overall, determining the salivary components of diabetic patients can be useful in detecting and managing their oral manifestations. 5 Previous research has assessed s-IgA levels and oral conditions among diabetic patients.…”

“…The relationship between diabetes and oral lichen planus and dental caries is less obvious; several studies have shown widely diverging results. [4][5][6][7] A few studies have suggested that decrease salivary flow results from the use of certain drugs, which would result in changes within the mouth, leading to caries, periodontal disease, and soft tissue alterations; the latter may foster invasion by opportunistic microorganisms. Several types of drugs may cause a subjective feeling of dry mouth, or may induce low salivary flow; these include anticholinergics, antidepressants, diuretics, antihistamines, myorelaxants, diazepinic drugs, and sympatheticomimetics such as hypotensive drugs.…”

“…Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a skin disorder that produces lesions in the mouth. OLP is reported to occur more frequently in patients with type1 diabetes compared to type 2 diabetes 90 . The reason for this is that type 1 diabetes is considered an autoimmune disease, and OLP has been reported to have an underlying autoimmune mechanism.…”
