Prevalence of oral lesions of autoimmune etiology in patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome

Abstract: The results of our analysis suggest that patients with pSS have a 12% prevalence of OLAIE with a wide range (7.3-21.2%) found between practices. This difference is likely related to the different screening protocols for oral dryness between sites.

“…Lichen planus has been associated with a number of disorders, generally of autoimmune origin: myasthenia gravis, Sjögren's syndrome, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, thymoma, lupus erythematous, coeliac disease. “…Autoimmune diseases are complex disorders caused by a combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. Previous research has produced evidence of a greater frequency of autoimmune diseases among OLP patients than among the general population, although this association might be merely accidental rather than linked to autoimmune pathogenesis …”

“…Although the etiology of OLP remains uncertain, there have been reports that described many systemic disorders linked to OLP such as metabolic syndrome [25], mental disorders [26], immune disease [27,28] and viral infection [29]. The association of these pathologies with OLP appears to depend upon geographic factors [30].…”

“…An autoimmune reaction by cytotoxic T lymphocytes to these activated keratinocytes may result in the tissue destruction which is clinical characteristic of OLP [49]. Several investigators have implicated an association between LP and other immune-mediated diseases sush as psoriasis [16,17], coeliac disease [18,19], rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren's syndrome [20]. Although, those reports are quite rare and the epidemiological evidence for this is scant.…”

“…Previous research has also produced some evidence of a higher frequency of some diseases, generally of autoimmune origin among OLP patients than among the general population (myasthenia gravis, vitiligo, alopecia areata, thymoma, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, celiac disease, Sjögren's syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis). However this association might be merely accidental rather than linked to autoimmune pathogenesis [14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. So, there is some controversial about mentioned links with OLP.…”
