Prevalence of oral hairy leukoplakia in 120 pediatric patients infected with HIV-1

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL) is an EBV (Epstein-Barr virus) opportunistic infection found in HIV-infected patients. It is an asymptomatic lesion that has an important prognostic value in AIDS. Differently from what takes place with HIV adult patients, OHL has been described in the literature as having a very small prevalence in pediatric patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of OHL in HIV pediatric patients using cytopathology. The sample consisted of 120 patient… Show more

“…However, the risk of OHL has not been reduced in children and women on HAART. For example in a study in Brazil, which assessed the prevalence of OHL in one hundred twenty HIV pediatric patients under the age of 13, one hundred ten (93.2%) of which were on antiretroviral therapy with 67.2% on HAART [34]. The total prevalence of OHL observed in these children was 18% higher than previous reports in adult men and women.…”

“…It is one of the most common virally induced oral diseases of HIVinfected individuals. 20 The risk of developing OHL correlates with high viral load and lower CD4+ count in both adults and children with HIV infection, 21 thus the occurrence of OHL has an important prognostic value in AIDS. 20 However, these numbers may be underestimated, as conventional cytopathology is able to discover subclinical OHL.…”
