Prevalence of Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii Antibodies in Northern Egypt

Abstract: In view of the worldwide importance of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum and the limited data on the seroprevalence of these parasites in Egypt, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of anti-T. gondii and anti-N. caninum antibodies in rabbits, cattle, and humans. We used ELISA methods based on surface antigen 2 of T. gondii (TgSAG2t) and surface antigen 1 of N. caninum (NcSAG1t). High seroprevalence of T. gondii (51.49%) was detected in pregnant women, and antibodies to N. caninum were also detected… Show more

“…In contrast, an English study found no human exposure to N. caninum antigens at all, despite a large study population, which consisted of 3,232 serum samples from the general population and 518 serum samples from a high-risk group (farm workers) (387). However, a recent study from Egypt found a Neospora seroprevalence of 7.92% in human serum samples (288). In a study from France, no sera from ICT women were positive for anti-N. caninum antibodies, although 4/400 serum samples from HIV-infected patients tested positive for anti-N. caninum antibodies (478).…”

“…Correlation between weather parameters and prevalence of acute infection in cattle and buffaloes in northern Punjab, Pakistan seroprevalence reported in southwestern parts of Pakistan [17], 22.3% in Thailand [10], 93.5% in Turkey [18], and 71.3% in Iran [19]. Comparatively, lower seroprevalence rates of 4.8%, 10.75%, 2.60%, 3.86%, and 5.70% have been found in Iran [20], Egypt [21], Malaysia [22], Korea [23], and China [24], respectively. Varying rates of seroprevalence in buffaloes have also been reported by various researchers in several countries, including 20.4% in Afghanistan [25], 3% in Vietnam [26], 8.8% in Iran [12], 30% in Iraq [11], 2.9% in India [27], and 7.8% in Trinidad [13].…”

“…In Egypt, several studies have been performed to detect T. gondii infection in human and animals (Elsheikha et al, 2009;Ibrahim et al, 2009;Ghoneim et al, 2010;El Deeb et al, 2012;Nassef et al, 2015). However, the data describing the role of T. gondii infection in acquiring serious adverse pregnancy outcomes as abortion, stillbirths or congenital malformation among pregnant women in Egypt is still limited (Ibrahim et al, 2009).…”
