“…When we added the additional narcoleptic cases detected in the primary health‐care system the overall prevalence of narcolepsy increased only slightly, up to 5.2 cases per 100 000 inhabitants. Our prevalence rates were three to 14 times lower than those found in other countries from Europe, North America and Asia, where the prevalence of narcolepsy has been estimated to range from 15 to 70 cases per 100 000 inhabitants (Franceschi et al ., ; Goldbart et al ., ; Heier et al ., ; Hublin et al ., ; Longstreth et al ., ; Ohayon et al ., ; Ondze et al ., ; Shin et al ., ; Silber et al ., ; Wing et al ., ). One possible explanation for these discrepancies could be a reduced genetic predisposition to narcolepsy in our population, as the frequency of the DQB1*0602 allele in Spain is approximately 10% (Balas et al ., ), which is lower than in other populations in Europe and North America, where the frequency of this allele ranges from 14 to 38% (Fennessy et al ., ; Mignot et al ., ).…”

“…Most epidemiological studies have estimated an overall prevalence for narcolepsy between of 15 and 70 cases per 100 000 inhabitants (Franceschi et al ., ; Goldbart et al ., ; Heier et al ., ; Hublin et al ., ; Longstreth et al ., ; Ohayon et al ., ; Ondze et al ., ; Shin et al ., ; Silber et al ., ; Wing et al ., ). The highest reported prevalence is in Japan (160 cases per 100 000 inhabitants) (Honda, ) and the lowest in Israel (0.14 cases per 100 000 inhabitants) and Saudi Arabia (four cases per 100 000 inhabitants) (Al Rajeh et al ., ; Wilner et al ., ).…”
