Prevalence of mites and their impact on laying hen (Gallus gallus domesticus) farm facilities in Egypt, with an analysis of deltamethrin residues in eggs and tissue

Abstract: This study was carried out on six laying hen farms, three mite-infested and three mite-free at Dakahlia and Damietta governorates in Egypt to demonstrate: (i) prevalence of different species of mites on laying hen farms; (ii) effects of mite infestation on chicken health and production; (iii) efficacy of deltamethrin (DMT) on treatment of mite infestation and (iv) residues of DMT in eggs and meat. The results showed that 12 mite species were detected in the mite-infested farms, this is the first record in Egyp… Show more

“…The prevalence rate of PRM in Asia was similar to that in Europe (1) and Africa (39)(40)(41)(42). Although some studies reported a low prevalence of PRM and other mite species, it should be noted that these studies lacked random sampling and were largely limited to a few farms, which may not be representative of the countrywide situation.…”

“…Similarly, Stekolnikov et al [60] recorded four species of chigger mites recovered from rodents in Saudia Arabia. From another perspective, Eladl et al [61] recorded a high prevalence of mites in laying hen farms in Egypt, reporting residues of pyrethroids in the egg contents.…”

“…Thus, it is important to study the ectoparasitic mite fauna associated with birds to control these mites that greatly impact our communities. In Egypt, acaricides are frequently used to control the poultry red mite D. gallinae, being the most common parasitic mite that attacks laying hen farms (Eladl et al, 2017). However, acaricide products have shown some limitations because of resistance development in mites.…”
