Prevalence of methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci among Egyptian patients after surgical interventions

Abstract: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are frequently isolated from wound infections. There are limited data examining the prevalence of methicillin-resistant CoNS (MRCoNS) among Egyptian patients after surgery. Thus, we studied 208 hospitalised patients, who had skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) due to various causes. Samples were cultured for isolation and identification of CoNS and isolates were screened for susceptibility against 23 different antimicrobials. Out of 241 Staphylococcal isolates, 114 (… Show more

“…A high frequency of CoNS isolates (68.6%) was MR, mostly isolated from SSI and ETA specimens. This finding is in agreement with the other studies [38], [40], whereas other researchers showed a higher prevalence of MR-CoNS (79.8%, 77.63%, and 76.4%, respectively) [34], 41,42]. It has been documented from many regions of the world that MR-CoNS are prevalent in hospitals [3,43].…”

“…Initial antibiotic treatment is given empirically, and later antibiotics are modified to the report of culture and sensitivity [1][2][3]5,[33][34][35][36]175,176]. Cultures of superficial swab specimens are not especially useful since they tend to yield polymicrobial growth: obtaining deep tissue biopsies for culture and sensitivity is likely to give more useful information [144,[177][178][179][180][181][182][183][184][185][186][187][188][189][190][191][192]. However, many microbiology services in resource-poor countries do not have facilities to analyse biopsy specimens on a routine basis [1][2][3]33,177].…”

“…In contrast to MRSA, MRCoNS carries variables of SCCmec types [6]. Although infections with MRSA have been well known, MRCoNS infections have also been frequently reported [7,8,9]. MRCoNS has been documented for high nasal prevalence in medical students, drug users, and in the university environment [2,10,11].…”
