Purpose The reported prevalence of malnutrition and related factors in gynecologic cancer varies. We aimed to describe nutritional status and to identify demographic, clinical, psychological, and nutritional factors contributing to malnutrition in gynecologic cancer patients. Methods We used a descriptive cross-sectional design. A total of 129 subjects were enrolled. Subjects agreed to undergo a face-to-face interview, including measurement of body mass index (BMI) and administration of structured questionnaires including the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire (SNAQ). Results Mean BMI was 23.4 kg/m 2 (range, 14.6-36.7 kg/m 2 ) and median body weight was 55.0 kg (range, 38.5-91.3 kg). Sixty-nine (53.5 %) of 129 patients reported severe malnutrition according to the PG-SGA. Malnutrition among patients who had received chemotherapy was more common than among patients who had not received chemotherapy within 6 months. Depression and appetite were significant factors predicting malnutrition in patients with gynecologic cancer. However, malnutrition was not related to age, marital status, level of education, or annual income among demographic factors, nor age at onset of cancer, cancer type, stage, or duration of cancer among clinical factors.Conclusions Assessment of nutritional status should be considered along with depression and appetite in patients with gynecologic cancer. In addition, regular and consistent nutritional assessment is essential in gynecologic cancer patients because of the high prevalence of malnutrition in these patients.

Introduction: Integrative medicine is becoming increasingly relevant to modern oncology. The present study aims to assess the demand for integrative therapeutic approaches including complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), body and mind practices, nutritional counseling, and psychological assistance among breast and gynecological cancer patients. Methods: From April to July 2017, a pseudo-anonymous questionnaire was distributed to cancer patients at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Technical University of Munich. Patterns of CAM use and demand for integrative health approaches were investigated by generating descriptive statistics. Results: 182 (90%) of 203 patients participated in the survey. 59% indicated the use of CAM practices in general, and 41% specifically in relation to their oncological disease. Most frequently used modalities were herbal supplements (32%), homeopathy (29%), vitamins (28%), and selenium (21%). Integrative health approaches that patients would have desired alongside conventional oncological treatment were CAM (54%), relaxation therapies (44%), and dietary counseling (43%). Conclusion: There is a considerable demand for integrative medicine among breast and gynecological cancer patients. Our results underline the need for the implementation of evidence-based integrative treatments in cancer care in order to meet the standards of modern oncology.

Despite advances in therapeutic options for cancers, treatment is often impeded by the presence of cancer attributable malnutrition and metabolic derrangements (1) . To increase early recognition and intervention of malnutrition and metabolic derangements in cancer, organisations such as the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) have emphasised a greater need for cancer nutritional risk screening and education on cancer nutrition (2) . However, prior studies have shown a lack of understanding of fundamental aspects of nutrition screening and treatment by physicians (3) but such data is lacking with regards to physician's knowledge in cancer malnutrition and metabolic derangements. Therefore, we investigated and compared the attitudes and knowledge towards nutritional support in cancer between physicians and dieticians at a tertiary referral oncology centre.Physicians (categorised as foundation year 2 (FY2s), core trainees (CTs), specialist registrars (SpRs), clinical research fellows (CRFs) and consultant oncologists (COs)) and oncology dieticians (ODs) were invited to participate in a multiple-choice questionnaire test. Questions assessed the attitudes towards cancer nutrition, assessment and management of common cancer nutritional scenarios. Comparisons in terms of correct and incorrect responses were made between physicians to ODs. Data is presented as the mean ± standard error (SE) and percentage test score with the use of one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to determine if any observed differences were statistically significant (p-value <0.05).FY2s (n = 15) CTs (n = 8) SpRs (n = 13) CRFs (n = 13) COs (n = 30) ODs (n = 10) All physicians (n = 79) Physicians collectively and as individual groups achieved a statistically significant lower score compared to ODs, thereby demonstrating a poorer knowledge base in topics centred upon cancer malnutrition and metabolic derangements. No statistically significant differences were observed between test scores when comparing physician groups despite an anecdotal perceived increase in clinical exposure and acumen with increasing seniority. Additionally, only 41.8 % (n = 33) of physicians collectively felt they had adequate knowledge of nutritional support for cancer patients despite 69.6 % (n = 55) stating they regularly make decisions regarding nutritional support in cancer patients. Overall, 89.9 % (n = 71) stated they felt provision of support in cancer nutrition would be valuable to their clinical career demonstrating a need for further cancer malnutrition and metabolic derangements education amongst physicians.
