Depression and appetite: predictors of malnutrition in gynecologic cancer

Abstract: Purpose The reported prevalence of malnutrition and related factors in gynecologic cancer varies. We aimed to describe nutritional status and to identify demographic, clinical, psychological, and nutritional factors contributing to malnutrition in gynecologic cancer patients. “…This finding is consistent with studies reporting that social support is a significant factor correlated with nutritional risks . In this study, the mean score on the SNAQ was 14.5; this finding was similar to those in previous studies on chronic diseases, with 13.3 in patients with gynecologic cancer and 13.4 in patients with hemodialysis . The score was, however, lower than the 15.5 previously obtained in community‐dwelling older adults .…”

“…These findings suggest that pretreatment depression may have affected blood chemistry, immunologic homeostasis, and body weight, which can be taken as evidence that pretreatment depression affected nutritional status. The close correlation between psychosocial status and nutrition has been well reported in several types of human malignancies, including head and neck cancer . Furthermore, our results support the presence of an association between psychological distress, nutritional status, and systemic blood markers in HNSCC.…”
