PREVALENCE OF MACROSCOPICALLY DETECTABLE Sarcocystis IN NORTH DAKOTA DUCKS

Abstract: Hunter-killed ducks were examined in North Dakota from 1969 through 1972 for prevalence of macroscopically detectable cysts of Sarcocysitis. Fifty-seven of 632 (9%) adult dabbling ducks and 1 of 420 (0.24%) juveniles were infected. Sarcocystis was not detected in 169 adult and 91 juvenile diving ducks.

“…Since his time Cornwell (1963) and Chabreck (1965) have added some diving ducks to the list. However, Hoppe (1976) reported finding that S. rileyi was present in 9% of 632 adult dabbling ducks and 0.24% of 420 juveniles, but not in 169 adult and 91 juvenile diving ducks of seven species in the genera Aythya, Bucephala and Oxyura. Duszynski & Box (1978) obtained sporocysts in an opossum Didelphis virginiana after feeding it sarcocysts from Anas acuta, but did not find any in three opossums fed sarcocysts from A.…”

“…The ducks on which main studies have been carried out in North America (Erickson 1940;Cornwell 1963;Chabreck 1965;Hoppe 1976;Drouin and Mahrt 1979;Costanzo 1990) have been investigated best. Publications of this nature are not abundant in Europe and Asia (Pak and Eshtokina 1984;Kalisińska et al 2003;Kutkienė and Sruoga 2004).…”

“…According to the data presented by Chabreck (1965), in Louisiana, they were recorded in 27.2% of 250 adult mallard ducks, whereas no sarcocysts were found in 154 immature individuals. No macrocysts were detected in 169 juveniles of mallards from North Dakota either, whereas having examined 307 adult individuals, they were found in 7.82% of cases (Hoppe 1976). According to Fedynich and Pence (1992) in the southern high plains of Texas, 6% prevalence in adults was recorded; while juveniles were not infected.…”
