Objectives: With the rise in the number of published papers in the biomedical field, plagiarism has become a major ethical concern as it has a direct effect on the quality of these papers. The objective of this research was to determine the perceptions of medical students towards plagiarism, the reasons students engage in plagiarism, the types of plagiarism, the consequences of plagiarism, and solutions to the problem of plagiarism. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted in two medical colleges in Rawalpindi, Pakistan from June to September, 2018, using self-administered structured questionnaires. Results: Of the 1100 participants, up to 86.91% (n=956) were not aware of the existence of plagiarism, but the majority, i.e. 71.18% (n=783) have plagiarised the work of others before. Copying from colleagues or senior students is the most common type of plagiarism that medical students engage in owing to the ease with which fellow students’ work can be shared and copied. However, a lack of institutional awareness of the extent to which plagiarism exists, poor vigilance in detecting it, and the absence of clear policies to deal with plagiarism are mostly to blame. Conclusion: Plagiarism is common among medical students in developing countries, and it is necessary to create awareness about the consequences of engaging in this unethical practice both in the academic field and in the larger medical research society, in order to reduce its prevalence. This study investigates whether it is possible to map norms of professionalism among medical student and faculty cohorts. The purpose is to provide ongoing information regarding the validity of this approach in multiple settings both within the United Kingdom (UK) and internationally. Its methodology is based on the Dundee Polyprofessionalism Inventory I: Academic Integrity, which solicits recommended sanctions as an indication of the severity with which particular lapses are regarded. The inventory was administered to cohorts in the UK, and results were compared with previously reported results from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Egypt. There are a great number of similarities — or congruence — between staff and students within institutions and also across institutions (and indeed countries). However there are also a number of areas in which there are notable differences between median sanctions suggested by staff and students for particular “lapses.” There are fewer areas in which there are greater than two levels of difference of median suggested sanction for students and staff across national boundaries (London and Scotland) or staff across the same national boundaries. The paper presents data from three UK schools and three other countries that indicate a broad base of congruence but also important inter-school and regional differences that may be a function of different national and ethnic cultures. The applicability of the resource needs to be further explored to confirm its usefulness as a tool in professionalism learning.

The literature suggests that a whole-institution culture of academic integrity is needed in order to prevent academic integrity breaches. It is also suggested that the national cultures and individual backgrounds of academic staff and students can impact on their propensity to breach academic integrity policies and on their uptake of initiatives aimed at enhancing academic culture. Much research has been conducted on academic integrity related to culture in the western world including the behaviours of international students, and some work has been conducted in various Asian contexts. However, little is known about how national culture and religion affect academic integrity in eastern countries with a Muslim majority. This paper presents a synthesis of the literature related to academic integrity and culture in regions where Muslims are the majority. An integrative literature review was carried out. Keywords were used to search and to collect academic integrity related research published from 2010 to 2020. The literature reviewed revealed that academics in countries with a Muslim majority faced challenges related to their local cultures, which included social and religious perceptions and practices. However, they were also able to draw upon some national and religious practices that supported and enhanced academic integrity. This paper concludes with recommendations for incorporating these positive cultural factors into an academic integrity framework for policy and practice appropriate for Muslim contexts.

Abstract: There are significant issues related to academic integrity in Pakistani medical schools that require remedy. The Dundee Polyprofessional Inventory-1 as customized for use in Pakistan is a useful tool to measure professionalism lapses related to academic integrity.
