Prevalence of immediate-type food allergy in Korean schoolchildren: A population-based study

Abstract: Although the prevalence and causes of food allergy (FA) vary by geographic location, large well-designed epidemiological studies in Asia are lacking. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of immediate-type FA in the general population of Korean schoolchildren. A population-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in 2010 using a stratified two-stage cluster-sampling design. “…On the other hand, the lifetime prevalence of FA ever diagnosed by a medical doctor was 4.7% and 5.1% among 6–12 and 12- to 15-year-olds, respectively, in 2000. As a part of the ISAAC Phase III, Ahn et al11) reported the findings of another population-based cross-sectional study of FA in more than 30,000 randomly selected participants among the first grade of elementary school (6–7 years old) and middle school children (12–13 years old). In this study, the prevalence among 6–7 and 12- to 13-year-old students was 15.0% and 12.5%, respectively, while the actual rates were 3.3% and 4.5% in each age group, respectively.…”

“…In a 2006 birth cohort study evaluating 1,177 infants, the prevalence of immediate-type FA was 5.3%, and the leading causes were hen's egg, cow's milk, peanut, and tree nuts 11. In a 2010 nationwide survey, the prevalence of immediate-type FA was estimated as 2.0% in 6- to 7-year-olds and 3.6% in 12- to 13-year-olds 12. Among 16,749 children aged 0-6 years, the prevalence of immediate-type FA was 3.7% 13…”
