The study was carried out on a total of 250 Gir cattle, which covered those presented to the Veterinary Clinical Complex of the College in Junagadh (Gujarat) for therapeutic measures and some from Gaushala near to Junagadh region. The animals were screened for common hemoprotozoan infection based on blood smear examination to record the prevalence rate of infection. The overall prevalence of hemoprotozoan infections recorded on the basis of microscopic examination of blood smears was 35.20 %. Out of these, 64 (25.60%) were positive for Theileria spp., 20 (8%) for Babesia spp., and 4 (1.6%) for Anaplasma spp. a highest prevalence was recorded in April (64.70%), followed by March (57.14%) and February (42.85%). The lowest prevalence was recorded in the month of December (5.88%). The highest prevalence was recorded in the summer season (40.71%), followed by rainy (34.37%) and winter season (19.56%). The highest prevalence of hemoprotozoan infection (41.86%) was recorded in Gir cattle of 3 to 8 years age group followed by 32.35% in 6 months to 3 years age group, and the lowest prevalence was recorded (24.32%) in older animals 8 years and above age group.

The present study on theileriosis prevalence in cattle and buffaloes of India was reckoned by systematic review and meta-analysis. The studies on theileriosis prevalence reported during the period 1984-2019, were collected by using online databases, and offline literature and meta-analyses was done in R-Software. The theileriosis prevalence was 20% [95% level, CI 16-25%, PI 2-74%], obtained by using 70,688 samples. The increasing trend of theileriosis prevalence was observed in the recent period [2011-19] when compared to past years. A higher theileriosis prevalence in the Central zone [24%] than in other zones was observed. The state-wise analysis revealed a higher prevalence in Puducherry and Assam. The method-wise breakdown revealed a higher prevalence by serology for India [39%] in comparison to other methods. Host species-wise scrutiny indicated a higher prevalence in cattle [22%] than buffaloes [14%]. Theileriosis was caused by Theileria (T.) annulata [21%], T. orientalis [16%], and T. species [17%] in India. The theileriosis prevalence established by systematic review and meta-analysis in the present study forms the first report from India to the best of our knowledge. It also documents a valuable literature resource on theileriosis prevalence studies in India. This study helps in identifying the theileriosis high-risk zones and states in India. It will help the policymakers and various stakeholders in decision making and wisely using the scarce resources available in implementing preventive strategies effectively. Further, theileriosis prevention can be employed by adopting effective therapeutic measures and vector control strategies, which will augment the profits to dairy farmers in India.

Background:Theileria annulata is responsible for tropical bovine theileriosis, which hasa significant impact on cattle health and leadsto remarkable economic losses to the dairy industry in India. In the present study, 702 Gir cattle were screened for Theileria annulata infection viatraditional microscopic and molecular techniques. The prevalence of the disease in relation to age, gender, season, tick infestations, and the frequency of acaricidal treatment in infected animals was assessed by the chi-square test, and potential risk factors were explored through multivariatelogistic regression. Additionally, a thorough clinical examination of each infected animal was performedto document clinical markers. Results: The overall prevalence of T. annulata infection in Gir animals was37.46%. Among Gir cattle, the prevalence and risk of disease was significantly greaterin the >5 year age group (57.73%; P=0.001, OR=5.19, 95% CI = 3.504-9.996), during the summer season (49.08%; P=0.001, OR=3.19, 95% CI = 2.096-4.878), with tick infestation (58.58%; P=0.001, OR=6.5, 95% CI = 4.609-9.183) and significantly lower in animals with regular acaricidal application (6.98%; P=0.001, OR=0.04, 95% CI = 0.022-0.091). Pyrexia, lymphadenopathy, altered appetite, ocular and nasal discharge, pale mucous membrane, and tick infestations are considered important clinical appraisals. Conclusions: The prevalence and risk of T. annulata infection were greater in addition to the variation in clinical markers in the Junagadh region, suggesting that further research is needed to explore the epidemiological status of this disease in the western region of Gujarat in Gir to develop effective preventive measures.
