Prevalence of human T-cell lymphotropic virus types 1 and 2 in blood donors of the Caruaru Blood Center (Hemope)

Abstract: BackgroundThere is difficulty in gathering data on the prevalence of human T-cell lymphotropic virus in blood donors as confirmatory testing is not mandatory in Brazil. This suggests there may be an underreporting of the prevalence. ObjectiveTo estimate the prevalence of human T-cell lymphotropic virus types 1 and 2 in donors of a blood bank in Caruaru, Brazil. MethodsThis was an observational, epidemiological, descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective study with information about the serology of donors of t… Show more

“…In this study, 3 out of 4 HTLV-1 seropositive donors were males. This is not in conformity with studies that have shown prevalence of HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 to be higher in females as opposed to males, which is related to transmission that is more efficient from men to women during sexual intercourse [18]. The high seroprevalence of HTLV-1 antibodies among male's blood donors than female is most likely due to the higher proportion of males compared with females in this study.…”

“…CO value for HTV-2 specific kit was calculated through the equation of (CO) =NC+0. 18 where NC is mean of the three negative controls = (0.04+0.031+0.01)/3 +0.18=0.25.…”

“…In this study, all HTLV-1/2 seropositive donors were males. This is not in conformity with studies that have shown prevalence of HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 to be higher in females as opposed to males which is attributed to more efficient transmission from men to women during sexual intercourse [ 23 ].…”

“…Furthermore, some false-positive reactions may be due to cross-reacting with anti-HLA antibodies, thus, it may not be reliable for the diagnosis of HTLV-1-associated acute infection. But this may be resolved by using western blot analysis techniques (Hamedi et al, 2012;Lima et al, 2013;Satake et al, 2016).…”
