Prevalence of HIV With Conjunctival Squamous Cell Neoplasia in an African Provincial Hospital

Abstract: A significantly high rate of HIV seropositivity was found in a group of African black patients with conjunctival SCC/CIS compared with a control group with benign conjunctival lesions. The direct correlation between HIV infection and SCC/CIS was reconfirmed in a case-control study. Therefore, an HIV test should probably be performed in cases of conjunctival SCC/CIS or dysplasia, especially among patients in high-risk populations.

“…Therefore, the true association of HIV infection with squamous cell neoplasms of the conjunctiva in Nigerians may be underestimated. Indeed, from the study of Kestelyn et al [36], who was the first to associate HIV infection with conjunctiva squamous carcinoma, and from other studies conducted in similar settings in African countries and other parts of the world, it appears that there is a consistent high incidence of conjunctival squamous carcinoma in HIV-seropositive individuals [36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43]. It may even be the first manifestation of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).…”

“…The majority of CIN cases reported in Africa are HIV-positive: 71% in Uganda, 86% in Malawi (Waddell, et al 1996), 70.6% in South Africa (Mahomed & Chetty 2002) and 92.3% in Zimbabwe (Porges & Groisman 2003). On the other hand, the prevalence of CIN in a HIV-positive population in Kenya was 7.8% (Chisi et al, 2006).…”
