Prevalence of hepatitis B virus infection in the Gezira State of Central Sudan

Abstract

This study shows that prevalence of HBV infection is high in the studied population and it is hoped that introduction of blood screening and vaccination against HBV would decrease the carrier pool in the next few years.

Among general population in Gezira State, Central Sudan, the prevalence of infection (positive Anti-HBcore) and carrier (positive HBsAg) is 47.5% and 6.9% respectively [17][18][19][20]. HBV is highly endemic in Sudan, where it is ranked as the second cause of acute liver failure and the main cause of hepatocellular carcinoma [21].…”
