Objectives:To determine the risk of perinatal transmission of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in Jordan. Methods: Plasma samples from 1000 pregnant Jordanian women were screened by ELISA for HBV markers (HBsAg, HBeAg, anti-HBe, anti-HBc and anti-HBs). Results: HBsAg and HBeAg were detected in 4.3% and 0.1% of the pregnant women, respectively. The overall prevalence of antibodies was 6%, 11.1% and 7.5% for anti-HBe, anti-HBc and anti-HBs, respectively. Women were assigned to four groups according to the serological patterns of HBV markers: susceptible (85.9%), with acute infection (2.9%), with chronic infection (1.4%) and previously infected (9.8%). Most women were at the third trimester of pregnancy, therefore women with acute and chronic hepatitis at this gestational age were at risk of transmitting HBV infection to their newborns. Women who belonged to the low socio-economic class were at higher risk of HBV infection. Conclusions: Based on the results, we recommend screening women for HBV during pregnancy in order to identify HBV carriers. All newborns born to carriers should be vaccinated immediately after birth, both passively and actively. Also vaccination of HBV seronegative pregnant women is recommended.

Objective: This study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of HBsAg, anti-HBs and anti-HCV positivity in Istanbul, Turkey. Subjects and Methods: The frequencies of HBsAg, anti-HBs and anti-HCV positivity were determined in 1,157 randomly selected patients attending the outpatient clinic of Istanbul University Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey, during the years 1998 and 2001. All patients underwent complete physical and various routine laboratory examinations. Results: Of the 1,157 patients, the prevalence of HBsAg, anti-HBs and anti-HCV was 6.6, 28.1 and 2.4%, respectively. It appeared that having dental and surgical procedures formed the risk factors for HBV infection. HBsAg positivity in the health care workers was not different from that of the other professions, but anti-HBs was significantly higher in this group. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that HBV infection occurs more frequently than HCV in Istanbul, and this poses an important health problem in the community.

ABS TRACTObjective: The risk of occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens (hepatitis B and hepatitis C) via sharp injuries such as needle stick injuries among health care workers, especially dental, nursing and midwifery students is a challenging issue. The aim of this prospective study is to evaluate the hepatitis B and hepatitis C seroprevelances of students in Bozok University High School of Health, to investigate the level of conscious on this issue and also to determine nonimmunised students and to vaccine them. Materials and Methods:In our study, a questionnaire form was applied to students of Bozok University High School of Health between February 2013-April 2013 and answers were evaluated with their HBsAg, Anti-Hbs, Anti-HBcIgG and Anti-HCV results. Results:One hundred and forty two students were included to the study. 80 (56.3%) students were studying at 1st class, 42 (29.6%) students were at 2 nd class, 9 (6.3%) were at 3 rd . Class and 11 (%7.8) were at 4 th . class. 115 (81%) students were female, 27 (19%) students were male, mean age was 20. 1±1.8 (18-25). Two (1.4%) students were HBsAg positive,127 (89.4%) students were anti-HBs positive and nine (6.3%) students were anti-HBcIgG positive. Anti-HCV was negative in all students. Two (28.6%) of seven students' anti-HbcIgG values were positive who were exposured jaundice during childhood (p=0.013). Two of nine students' HBsAg positivity remained whose anti-HBcIgG value were positive, seven of these nine students Anti-HBs values became positive. 120 (94.5%) of 127 Anti-HBs positive students had been acquired immunization by vaccine. 13 (9.2%) students were taken into vaccine program whose HBsAg, Anti-HBcIgG and Anti-Hbs values were negative.
