Prevalence of hand disorders in type 2 diabetes mellitus and its correlation with microvascular complications

Abstract: Background:Physicians have long recognized the association between diabetes mellitus and several pathologic conditions of the hand. The most commonly recognized maladies are limited joint mobility (LJM), Dupuytren's disease (DD), trigger finger (TF), and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Incidence of these hand disorders has increased in the setting of diabetes. Collectively, these are described as diabetic hand syndrome.Aim:The aims were to find out the prevalence of hand disorders in diabetic patients, and to st… Show more

“…Patients with DM may experience certain musculoskeletal complications because of macrovascular and microvascular complications. 18 , 19 An increase of advanced glycosylation end-products (AGEs) may result in skin thickening and formation of nodules and contractures. 20 , 21 In addition, unregulated proliferation of collagen may also result from irregular expression of peptides that regulated a number of growth factors including cytokines transforming growth factor-β 22 and basic fibroblast growth factor.…”

“…Other risk factors include past myocardial infarction, retinopathy, and peripheral neuropathy. FS is also associated with other hand problems such as DC and cheiroarthropathy ( 8 ). Imaging, histological, and histochemical studies have revealed the presence of fibroblasts with heavy proliferation in the tissue due to cytokine-mediated inflammation, T-cells, macrophages, and chronic inflammatory infiltration comprising mast cells, and accompanying Type I and Type III collagen accumulation.…”

“…Seperti jari Trigger Finger, kontraktur Dupuytren, dan lesi kompresi saraf perifer. Keterbatasan mobilitas sendi juga dikenal sebagai diabetes cheiroarthropathy / sindrom tangan kaku diabetik dan telah ditemukan pada 8-50% dari semua pasien dengan diabetes tipe 1 dan juga terlihat pada pasien diabetes tipe 2 (Gutch et al, 2013).…”
