Prevalence of Ectoparasitic Infection of Rodents Captured near Student’s Hostels: Zoonotic Implications

Abstract: Background and Aims: Rodents constitute more than 42% of the known mammalian species, with 1700 species which belongs to three different families, include Muridae, Microtidae, and Sigmodontidae. Rodents species such as R. r. diardii and R. norvegicus play an important role as hosts for ectoparasites and reservoirs for various types of viruses, bacteria, rickettsia, protozoa, and helminths which are responsible for causing zoonotic diseases to humans and other vertebrate animals. The aim of this work is to iden… Show more

“…e higher prevalence of ectoparasites in male animals is consistent with the ndings of Mfune et al, (2013), who reported a higher prevalence of eas in male animals (54.3%) than in female animals (34.6%) in Namibia. Additionally, Mustapha et al, (2019) reported a higher prevalence of ectoparasites in male hosts (45.8%) compared to females hosts (30.8%) in Malaysia.…”

“…Black rats are common invation in urban area, the residential area and market places were favorable habitats which regularly contact with human. The disadvantage of this rodents were high reproductive capacity, easily transmitted Rodentborne pathogens and propensity towards close association with humans (Battersby, 2002;Meerburg et al, 2009;Mustapha et al, 2019).…”
