Introduction: Anemia continues to be a major public health problem worldwide, particularly among females of reproductive age in developing country settings. The prevalence of anemia in South Asia is among the highest in the world, mirroring overall high rates of malnutrition. Objective: 1) To estimate the prevalence of anemia and undernutrition among reproductive age group females. 2) To study factors associated with anemia and undernutrition among reproductive age group females. Material and Method: This was cross-sectional study, which was carried out from June 2011 to December 2012 at Nanded City in Maharashtra state among nonpregnant ever-married women of 15–49 years age with a sample size of 750 selected using probability proportional to size sampling technique. Percentage, Chi-square test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) test, and Student’s t test were used for analyzing the data. Results: The prevalence of anemia among reproductive age group women was 554 (73.9%). 20.8% of women were undernourished and 4.1% were obese. There was a significant difference in the hemoglobin percentage of study subjects in relation to their age at marriage, weight, and body mass index (BMI). Mean BMI increases significantly as the age of women and duration of marriage increases. Conclusion: Nutritional status has a significant effect on the grade of anemia. Women of reproductive age groups are affected by anemia irrespective of age and parity.

Introduction: With escalating incidence of road traffic crashes (RTCs), related injuries and deaths in Sri Lanka, understanding its burden on vulnerable road users such as older people and people with disability have important implications for traffic injury prevention and transport policy planning. Objectives:To determine crash characteristics and patterns of injuries sustained by victims of RTCs admitted to a tertiary-care hospital and investigate if these differ for older people Methods: Recorded data of all victims of RTCs admitted to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital from 1 January to 31 March 2017 were systematically extracted and analysed.Results: Of the 573 victims, 70 (12.2%) were older people aged 60 years and above. Pedestrians (46%) were the most common road user type injured among older people. In contrast, among younger victims, the motorcyclists dominated (54%). Older people were involved in RTC between 9.01 am and 12.00 noon more often than those who were younger (22% vs. 9.5%), and had significantly higher incidence of severe head injuries (13% vs. 3%), fractures (54% vs. 40%) and deaths (10% vs. 2%), and referrals to rehabilitation services at discharge (60% vs. 39%).Conclusions: Older road crash victims are at higher risk of head injuries, fractures, and deaths than younger people. Given the lack of documented data, the influence of pre-existing disability on road injury outcomes could not be investigated. Future injury surveillance, intervention and evaluative efforts should explicitly consider the needs of these vulnerable road users.

Diversity Towards the Human Capital Development and Staff Job Satisfaction in Tertiary Institutions in Kogi State

This study aimed at Human Capital Development (HCD) and Job Satisfaction (JS) in public tertiary institutions in Kogi State. The study applied a descriptive research survey. The sampling method used in this study was a multi-stage sampling technique. A sample size of 123 was chosen. The quantitative data obtained from respondents using a questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson Correlation Matrix and Ordered Probit Regression. Findings showed a statistically significant and positive relationship between HCD and Staff Job Security in Public Tertiary Institutions in Kogi State and that HCD significantly affects the JS of Staff in higher institutions in Kogi State. The study concluded that through HCD, Public Tertiary Institutions could enhance JS. The study recommended that the management of Public Tertiary Institutions should increase investment in HCD to facilitate improved job security of staff in Kogi State. The government should also provide adequate funding support to adopt best practices in HCD in Public Tertiary Institutions in Kogi State. Furthermore, the management should adopt any strategic measure to increase commitment to HCD as it positively affects the JS of Staff in higher institutions in Kogi State.
