Prevalence of Bifid Mandibular Canal Amongst Indian Population: A Radiographic Study

Abstract: There were 5800 OPGs examined, out of which 2576 were of women and 3224 were of men. Bifid mandibular canals were observed in 135 (2.3%) out of 5800 digital panoramic images. There was no statistically significant correlation found with regard to age. Bifid mandibular canals were found with a female-to-male ratio of 1:1.2. The most frequently encountered type of BMC was type II (1.34%) followed by type I (0.72%), type IV (0.15%), and type III (0.1%).

“…Type 2 BMC as their main finding (Kalantar Motamedi et al, 2015;Rothe et al, 2018), and another two reported that Type 4 BMC accounted for more than one third of their accessory canals (Rossi et al, 2012;Salvador et al, 2010). fifth category to Naitoh's classification, which they called the ramus canal, that is, a canal that extends from the IAC to the ramus region, which is above the mandibular foramen.…”

“…In summary, the most commonly observed BMC is Type 1 (Devito & Tamburus, ). Only two studies reported a high percentage of Type 2 BMC as their main finding (Kalantar Motamedi et al, ; Rothe et al, ), and another two reported that Type 4 BMC accounted for more than one third of their accessory canals (Rossi et al, ; Salvador et al, ).…”

“…Several studies have evaluated the anatomical location and morphology of the bifid MC by means of panoramic images [8][9][10]14,17,21 , but due to the limitations of two-dimensional (2D) exams, it is not always possible to diagnose such variations. However, CBCT evaluation enables the identification of variations that may not be seen in orthopantomography examinations 6,20,22 .…”

“…26 cases (19.3%) were located unilateral/ left side, 29 cases (21.5%) were located unilateral/ right side, and 80 cases (59.3%) were bilateral. 17 Whereas in the study of Lorenzo et al 18 it was found 83 cases of BMC with results based on the location, namely found 24 cases (28.9%) located unilateral/ left side, 39 cases (46.9%) located unilateral/ right side, and 20 cases (24.2%) located bilaterally.…”
