Prevalence of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease in Persian cats and related‐breeds in Sydney and Brisbane

Abstract: These results show that the prevalence of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease amongst purebred, long-haired cats in Australia is currently very high. Ultrasound detection schemes are easy to establish and breeder participation can be encouraged through subsidisation.

“…Since long-haired breeds have a predisposition for polycystic kidney disease syndrome, the pancreatic cysts might be related to this disease. [4][5][6]12 Similarly, in people with polycystic kidney disease, pancreatic cysts are not uncommon. 1 Pancreatic biopsy is still considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of CP in humans and cats.…”

“…Doppler echocardiography revealed diastolic thickening of the interventricular septum and left ventricular posterior wall as well as left atrial enlargement (left atrium/aorta > 1.8), all of which changes that are compatible with HCM ( Fig. 1C) (BROWN, GAILLOT, 2013). Inflammation of the lower urinary tract was treated with meloxicam 0.1 mg/kg every 24 h for 3 days and with food and environmental management; atenolol (8 mg every 12 h), fish oil (1 g every 24 h), and acetylsalicylic acid (20 mg/kg every 72 h) were also administered.…”

“…The prevalence of PKD in Persian cats is high, reaching 47% in Australia (BARRS et al, 2001) and 39% in the United Kingdom (YOUNG et al, 2005). The disorder is autosomal dominant (AD-PKD) and there are genetic tests that enable identification of animals carrying the genetic mutation, thus facilitating early diagnosis of the disease (YOUNG et al, 2005).…”
