Prevalence of autoimmune thyroid disease in patients with psoriasis: a meta-analysis

Abstract: ObjectivePsoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease with autoimmune aetiology. A possible link between psoriasis and autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) has been suggested in some studies with inconsistent findings. This meta-analysis aims to determine the association between psoriasis and AITD.DesignA meta-analysis of observational studies.Data sourcesPubMed, EMBASE, Scopus and the Cochrane Library were searched up to 1 November 2021.Eligibility criteria for selecting studiesWe included non-randomised studies,… Show more

“…Patients with psoriasis have been reported to suffer from a higher frequency of autoimmune diseases (#6), such as uveitis [ 60 ], inflammatory bowel disease [ 61 ], multiple sclerosis [ 62 ], Hashimoto’s thyroiditis [ 63 ], bullous pemphigoid [ 64 ], vitiligo [ 65 ], and alopecia areata [ 66 ]. The association between them is exerted through intricate immunopathological pathways and mechanisms, which have not yet been fully elucidated [ 67 ].…”

“…Such an incidence rate may have contributed to the distinct difference between patients with PsA and controls without PsA. In patients with PsO and PsA, few studies exist on the association with thyroid cancer compared with the evidence for association with autoimmune thyroid disorders 29–33. Future research will be necessary on the association between PsO, PsA and thyroid cancer and whether autoimmune thyroid disorders are involved in this association.…”
