Prevalence of antinuclear autoantibodies in the serum of normal blood dornors

Abstract: The presence of autoantibodies is not necessarily pathologic and has to be related to the age group, gender, and clinical condition of the patient.

“…RA is in general not an ANA-associated disease, since ANA positivity has been reported in only up to 30% of patients with RA [26]. Despite the fact that the prevalence of ANAs has been reported to be higher in healthy women than that in healthy men [27, 28] and higher in elderly than in younger healthy individuals [29, 30], in the ILD subjects of our study we did not observe these associations.…”

“…Investigation of ANA seroprevalences is important, not only in the identification of autoimmune diseases in societies, but also in revealing subclinical conditions prior to disease, guiding early treatment and monitoring and in establishing the risk factors for these diseases (2). ANA seroprevalences between 4.2% and 22.6% have been reported for different societies (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). However, there are insufficient data regarding the ANA seroprevalence for the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey, which includes the province of Trabzon, as well as for other regions of the country.…”
