“…The percentage of horses infected with A. perfoliata was considerably lower than that reported by other investigators (Owen et al, 1988;Bain and Kelly, 1977;Ljungstr0m et al, 1993;Fogarty et al, 1994). Climatic differences between Norway and other countries may be one reason for the difference in prevalence.…”

“…Despite the relatively limited data reported in this study, the percentage of horses infected with A. perfoliata (64.5% detection rate) was similar to that reported in previous studies (Slocombe, 1979;Imrie and Jacobs, 1987;Owen et al, 1988;Pearson et al, 1993;Fogarty et al, 1994;Williamson et al, 1997). Mean abundance and mean intensity, as defined by Bush et al (1997), were 49.7 and 77, respectively.…”

“…However, since the 1980s the increasing number of case reports describing a close association between specific causes of equine colic, such as ileal impaction, ileocecal and cecocaecal intussusception, caecal rupture and spasmodic colic and A. perfoliata infection (Barclay et al, 1982;Beroza et al, 1985;Cosgrove et al, 1986;Owen et al, 1988;Proudman and Edwards, 1992;Proudman et al, 1998;Biglietti and Garbagnati, 2000) has focussed interest on the role that this parasite plays as a risk factor for specific types of equine intestinal ailments (Boswinkel and Sloet van Oldruitenborgh-Oosterbaan, 2007).…”

“…With some species variation, oribatid mites appear to prefer certain habitats over others and exhibit peak abundance at specific times during the year (van Nieuwenhuizen et al 1994).
