Prevalence, antimicrobial resistance and serotype distribution of group B streptococcus isolated among pregnant women and newborns in Rabat, Morocco

Abstract: In Morocco, maternal GBS colonization is high. Penicillin can continue to be the cornerstone of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis. A pentavalent GBS vaccine (Ia, Ib, II, III and V) would have been effective against the majority of the colonizing cases in this setting, but a trivalent one (Ia, Ib and III) would only prevent 28 % of the cases.

“…GBS isolated from pregnant women in different primary studies conducted in Africa showed resistance to penicillin, ampicillin, erythromycin, clindamycin, vancomycin, ciprofloxacin, chloramphenicol, and tetracycline [10,11,15,31,36,65]. Unlike to Western countries, few data are available about GBS serotypes in different parts of the Africa since the 1989 in Ethiopia to 2018 in Morocco [22,28,30,31,33,39,49,54,66]. A review from the USA on GBS serotypes showed lower proportions of women with serotypes Ia, Ib, or III with the mean prevalence estimate of 55.0%, and in Europe, 58.3% [67].…”

“…Alternative antibiotics, such as lincosamides, are used for patients with ␤-lactam allergies. Due to resistance evolution, macrolides, aminoglycosides, and tetracyclines are no longer clinically efficacious (21)(22)(23)(24). While our group and others have observed that GBS is resistant to a wide range of antibiotics, GBS resistance remains poorly characterized and is a frontier of concern in the clinic.…”

“…Epidemiological reports show serotype V is predominant in most regions of the African continent comprising not less than one third of the GBS isolates. This includes the North as reported in Egypt [26], Algeria [27] and Morocco [28]; in the West as shown in Senegal [29], Gambia [30,31] and Nigeria [32]; in central Africa as described in Gabon and Central African Republic [29]; the South as found in Botswana [33] and the Western Cape region of South Africa [34]. The reported prevalence ranged from 30.3 to 66.67%.…”
