Prevalence and significance of thyroid autoantibodies in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection: a prospective controlled study

Abstract: These results suggest a weak association between HCV and thyroid autoimmunity in females. As in the ordinary population with thyroid autoantibodies, they should be evaluated for thyroid status and be followed-up if thyroid autoimmunity is evident. However, seropositivity of thyroid autoantibodies is not a contraindication to interferon therapy.

“…However, some studies suggested that the prevalence of thyroid disease was also increased in CHC patients after exclusion of J Gastrointestin Liver Dis, June 2016 Vol. 25 No 2: 227-234 those being treated with IFN-α compared with normal subjects [6,7]. Besides, anti-thyroid antibodies had been found in sera of HCV infected subjects before IFN-α therapy [8,9].…”

“…In 6 studies [16,17,[20][21][22][23], the mean OR for TPOAb was 1.96 (95%CI 1.19-3.23), suggesting that the HCV group had a two-fold higher prevalence of TPOAb. ATMA was tested in only 5 studies [6,7,19,22,25]. The positive rate of ATMA in the HCV group was higher than that in the control group, with the pooled OR of 1.86 (95%CI 1.17-2.96) (Fig.1).…”

“…75 Several studies have looked into associations between the development of autoimmune manifestations and HCV genotypes. 18,[76][77][78] Most studies did not find a significant correlation between the HCV genotype and the development of thyroid autoantibodies 18,76 or other autoantibodies. 76 One study from Taiwan showed an association between mixed infection with genotypes 1bϩ2b and the development of microsomoal (i.e., TPO) antibodies, 78 again suggesting viral genotype does not influence the predisposition to thyroid autoimmunity in patients infected with HCV.…”
