Prevalence and pattern of lower extremity injuries due to road traffic crashes in Fako Division, Cameroon

Abstract: Introduction Low and middle income countries are disproportionately affected with road traffic injuries and the lower extremity is one of the most affected anatomical body parts. There exist very limited data on the pattern of lower extremity injuries in the Cameroon especially in the South West Region. We therefore, hypothesized that lower limb injuries are common in road traffic crashes and motorized two wheelers are the commonest cause. Methods This was a hospital ba… Show more

“…In urban Cameroon, open fractures of long bones of the lower limb accounted for 23.9% of road traffic injured victims [14]. In south west Cameroon, open fractures accounted for 60.29% of injured [15]. Efforts to expand access to trauma care have been limited by the lack of injury epidemiology data and a poor understanding of barriers to use of care [16].…”

“…Lower extremity fractures constitute approximately 20% of all fractures occur in children and may cause significant mortality and morbidity (16). In the study of Ngunde et al, the incidence ratio of lower extremity fractures in patients experienced a motor vehicle accident was found to be 35% (4). In a study conducted with adult patients, the lower extremity fracture was detected 3 times more than the upper extremity fracture occurred in motor vehicle accident (3).…”
