Prevalence and distribution of Arcobacter species in various sources in Turkey and molecular analysis of isolated strains by ERIC-PCR

Abstract: Contamination of the poultry carcasses and minced beef meat, rectal and gall bladder samples of cattle with arcobacters poses a risk for both human and animal infections. Detection of several different Arcobacter strains may suggest multiple sources for contamination and infection.

“…Phenotypic and biochemical characteristics of the isolates were similar to those of isolates of Arcobacter cryaerophilus from humans (Holt et al, 1994), other animals (Vandamme et al, 1991;Atabay et al, 2006;Aydin et al, 2007;Chinivasagam et al, 2007) and fish (Aydin et al, 2000(Aydin et al, , 2002Bulut and Aydin, 2004;Yildiz and Aydin, 2006). Bacteria were additionally passaged on selective media and the isolates only grew on Campylobacter selective agar and TS agar.…”

“…Bacteria were additionally passaged on selective media and the isolates only grew on Campylobacter selective agar and TS agar. When considering contamination sources of A. cryaerophilus, fish farmers should remember that this pathogen can exist in drinking water (Jacob et al, 1998), canal water (Dhamabutra et al, 1992), river water (Morita et al, 2004), sewage (Stampi et al, 1993;Houf and Stephan, 2007), seawater and plankton (Fera et al, 2004) and organs, carcass and faeces of healthy and diseased farm animals (Van Driessche et al, 2005;Atabay et al, 2006;Aydin et al, 2007;Chinivasagam et al, 2007).…”

“…Kabeya et al (2003) reported the Arcobacter spp. prevalence to be 3.6% in Japan, while Aydin et al (2007) reported it to be 6.9% in Turkey, Van Driessche et al (2003) found a prevalence of 39% in Belgium and Vilar et al (2010) found one of 41.7% in Galicia. Kabeya et al (2003) isolated A. butzleri, A. cryaerophilus andA.…”

“…In one of the positive samples (7.7%), A. butzleri and A. skirrowii were present together. It has been reported that more than one genotype may be found together due to the heterogeneity of the tested animals (Atabay et al 2002;Van Driessche et al 2005;Aydin et al 2007;Shah et al 2011). The most frequently isolated species in healthy livestock was A. butzleri (Kabeya et al 2003;Van Driessche et al 2003;Ongor et al 2004).…”
