Prevalence and demographic characteristics of comorbid epilepsy in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy: a nationwide population-based study

Abstract: SES and geographic variables were significantly associated with the risk of epilepsy in children with CP. Patients with epileptic CP had a higher odds ratio of several neuropsychiatric diseases, including mental retardation, ophthalmologic problems, hearing impairment, and hydrocephalus.

“…28 Extensive brain injury in CP patient affecting cortex, deep white matter, and central nuclei provide a reason for them to develop epilepsy. A study in China stated that epilepsy incidence is influenced by geographic position and socio-economic condition [29] that can relate with Indonesia condition, especially Surabaya. Among those with epilepsy, statistically, female has bigger risk developing epilepsy.…”

“…16 However, for the most severe categories, the issue is how much the seizure disorder is already 'baked into' measures of survival, given that the Australian Cerebral Palsy Register 17 found that 65% of children in GMFCS level V at age 5 years had a seizure disorder. In Taiwan, 18 there was a seizure prevalence over all GMFCS levels of 30%, but with no subdivisions. My personal experience is that more than 95% of all children in the TF/CLH category seen for medicolegal reasons had a diagnosed seizure disorder.…”

“…With regard to gender, there are a higher percentage of males with a diagnosis of CP than females, as was reported in the literature [20], and observed in this study. This higher prevalence in males is related to variants in the interleukin (IL)-6 gene, greater vulnerability with regard to the protective function of hormones, polymorphisms, and brain structure [2,20], with higher susceptibility for the default quadriplegic pattern [19].…”

“…Epilepsy is characterized by recurrent seizures and is one of the most prevalent comorbidities in individuals with CP, in whom it is considered a marker of CP severity [2]. The prevalence of epilepsy is estimated to be 77% in individuals with CP [3].…”
