The occurrence of multi-drug resistant Staphylococcus aureus in food product of animal origin has increased the concern about their spread into the food supply chain. Presence of multidrug-resistant S. aureus in food products, including ready-to-eat foods imposes potential hazard for consumers. The objective of this research was to investigate the presence of multi-drug resistance of S. aureus in sixty ready-to-eat shawarma sandwiches. Agar-disc diffusion assay determined their resistance to 11 antibiotics. The sea and sed enterotoxin genes were detected by polymerase chain reaction method. Biofilm formation potential (BFP) was quantified by microtitre plate assay. The result revealed that thirty-six samples (60%) were positive for S. aureus. Majority of the isolates (n = 29; 80.6%) were resistant to at least one antibiotic. The isolates demonstrated highest resistance against ampicillin (69.4%) and penicillin (69.4%), while resistance to ciprofloxacin, tetracycline and kanamycin were 47.2%, 33.3% and 22.2%, respectively. Several isolates were resistant to trimethoprim (5.6%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole-(2.8%), gentamicin (2.8%) and cephalothin (2.8%), while none exhibited resistance to chloramphenicol and nitrofurantoin. Out of the thirty-six isolates, twelve isolates (33.3%) were resistant to three or more classes of antibiotic (multidrug-resistant) and 50% had a Multiple Antibiotic Resistance index value more than 0.25. Of the multi-drug resistant isolates, four were positive for sea genes but no sed genes were present. All multi-drug resistance isolates were biofilm formers with five and six isolates were strong and moderate formers, respectively. Additionally, all the sea gene carrying multi-drug resistance isolates were strong biofilm formers. These findings revealed shawarma as a potential vehicle for the spread of multidrug-resistant S. aureus, suggesting more control measures for ready-to-eat food.

The production and sale of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is fundamentally important to the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. In this region, one of the main forms of sale occurs in street markets (fairs). A high incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains was previously detected in different food-related environments in Brazil. However, limited data is available about the presence of MRSA in street markets commercializing tilapias. In this study, we identified Staphylococcus aureus from tilapia and utensils used in the sale of tilapia in the street markets of a semi-arid Brazilian municipality and characterized the virulence potential of the isolates by analyzing their β-lactam resistance, intercellular adhesion and enterotoxin genes. Materials and methods. The study used samples from the 5 main markets in the city. Phenotypic tests to determine antimicrobial resistance, exopolysaccharide (EPS) production, the potential for biofilm formation and cell surface hydrophobicity were conducted on S. aureus isolates. The presence of antimicrobial resistance genes (mecA and blaZ), potential biofilm production genes (icaA and icaD) and enterotoxin (se) genes was investigated.Results. Coagulase-positive staphylococci (CoPS) were detected in samples from all markets in discordance with the legal limits in force. Twelve isolates were confirmed to be S. aureus. Ten isolates demonstrated multidrug resistance (MDR). All isolates were able to produce EPS and form biofilms. Eight isolates exhibited strong hydrophobicity and six a high potential for biofilm formation. Twelve isolates were positive for mecA, blaZ, icaD and sed. Conclusion. Tilapia marketed in unsuitable conditions may be a vehicle for staphylococcal food poisoning and for the dissemination of MRSA to consumers. Additionally, the ability of the isolates to produce biofilms is an alert to the presence and persistence of these virulent microorganisms on utensils used for the commercial distribution of tilapia.

Presence of Staphylococcus aureus in goat milk and dairy product could lead to human illness. The aim of the present study was to characterize S. aureus isolated from goat milk and its products. The samples used in these studies ABSTRAKKeberadaan Staphylococcus aureus pada susu kambing dan produk olahannya dapat menyebabkan penyakit pada manusia. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk isolasi dan karakterisasi S. aureus dari susu kambing dan produk olahannya. Susu kambing dan produk olahannya yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini d iambil dari peternakan kambing dan tempat pengolahan susu kambing di kabupaten Sleman. Isolasi S. aureus berdasarkan reaksi biokimia. Karakterisasi S. aureus dilakukan terhadap hemolisin, klumping faktor, koagulase, dan sensitifitas antibiotik. Hemolisin d itentukan dengan kulture pada b lood agar plate, sedangkan klumping faktor dengan slide agglutination test. Mencampur plasma kelinci dengan kulture cair S. aureus dalam tabung reaksi digunakan untuk deteksi koagulase, sedangkan sensitifitas antibiotik dengan agar difusi. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa susu kambing dengan jumlah S. aureus yang masih memenuhi ketetapan SNI No 01-6366-2000 sebanyak 86%. S. aureus dari susu kambing memiliki karakter tidak hemolitik 80%, klumping faktor positif 20%, koagulase positif 40%, resisten terhadap ampisilin dan penisilin 30%, sedangkan terhadap eritromisin, neomisin, sulfonamide, dan tetrasiklin masing-masing 10%.
