“…With the increment of NaOH dosage from 0.25 to 2% (treatment for 1 h), the M w and M n of lignin fractions decrease from 4163 to 3088 and from 2369 to 1772 g/mol, respectively. The alkaline catalyst-assisted organic solvent appears to cut off the alkali-sensitive bonds between lignin units or between lignin and carbohydrates and effectively reduce the size of lignin molecules . Interestingly, the molecular weight of lignin fractions was increased slightly from 3088 to 3400 g/mol with the treatment time from 1 to 1.5 h. The increase could be due to repolycondensation of released lignin due to prolonged processing times .…”

“…Likewise, the total reducing sugar of a cauliflower waste reached a maximum output of 831 mg/g through enzymatic hydrolysis coupled with sodium acetate-aided methanol . In addition, high-purity and antioxidative lignin from a willow could be extracted through a NaOH-catalyzed sulfolane/water system . These successful efforts are being continued with an emphasis on optimizing lignin isolation and/or improving the yield of fermented sugar.…”

“…Figure 5 highlights the FT-IR spectra of LNPs, SA beads and SA/LNPs-40 beads. In the LNPs, characteristic peaks at 1460 cm −1 correspond to the vibration of C−H deformation of lignin [ 55 ]. The peaks at 1508 cm −1 and 1024 cm −1 are due to C−C aromatic skeletal vibration and C−O stretching, respectively [ 56 , 57 ].…”

“…Zhong et al pretreated willow by alkaline catalysis with a sulfolane/water solvent system and prepared antioxidant lignin with high purity. The results showed that the lignin removal rate was 54% at 170°C with the sulfolane/water solvent system (mass ratio of 50/50; Zhong et al, 2020 ). Interestingly, when 4 wt% of NaOH was added as alkali catalyst, the lignin removal rate could gradually increase up to 94%, and the losses in glucose and xylose were controlled around 1.62 and 4.08%, respectively.…”
