Presurgical nasal moulding in a neonate with cleft lip

Abstract: The concept of presurgical nasoalveolar moulding (PNM) was developed to improve the aesthetic result of surgically corrected cleft lip. This paper presents the method of fabrication of PNM appliance and the case of a 30-day-old neonate with unilateral cleft lip in whom nasal moulding was performed. Treatment was initiated at 30 days and continued for 60 days after which the surgical correction of cleft lip was performed. Significant improvement in aesthetics and symmetry of the nose was achieved at the end of … Show more

“…Spengler et al and Ezzat et al concluded that PNAM significantly increases surgical outcomes by decreasing the gap between the alveolar cleft, reshaping the arch symmetry, decreasing in columellar angle deviation, and maintenance of the bialar width of the nose. 4 Similar results were achieved in this case.…”

“…Furthermore, the toxic effects of eugenol are more pronounced when it is converted to quinine methide metabolite (Thampson et al, 1998). Membrane damages by eugenol are also reported in human studies as a causative agent of stomatitis that is inflammatory process affecting oral mucous membranes sometimes conversion in to oral cancer (Deshpande et al, 2014). Exposure to 0.7 mmol l -1 of sitosterol for 72 h can cause contraction of the…”

“…Many studies have revealed that presurgical nasoalveolar molding can effectively reduce fissure width, restore nasolabial symmetry, and increase columella length. [20][21][22] One month later, patients undergo a lip adhesion operation to close the cleft. 23 Therefore, we suggest that in conjunction with nasal molding, the nostril height on the affected side should be raised appropriately during surgery to a height greater than that of the nostril on the healthy side.…”

“…We suggest that patients with a complete cleft lip should resort to presurgical nasoalveolar molding within 1 month of birth. Many studies have revealed that presurgical nasoalveolar molding can effectively reduce fissure width, restore nasolabial symmetry, and increase columella length 20–22 . One month later, patients undergo a lip adhesion operation to close the cleft 23 .…”
