Pressure dependence of the MI-transition temperature under competing double exchange–superexchange interactions close to CDO afm insulating states

An apparatus has been designed which measures the baric coefficient γ, defined as the relative change of a resistance under pressure: R=R0(1+γp), using a double ac method, the pressure modulation of the resistance being obtained via compressional sound waves. First results on manganites RE1−xAxMnO3 are obtained and compared with the pressure derivatives of R(p,T) as obtained with static methods. Good agreement was obtained at larger superimposed static pressure Pst, however, extra results are obtained in the limit Pst→0 and in the case of a percolation of phase separated volumes.

At P = 0, the strong hysteretic nature of metal-insulator transition ͑MIT͒ and the abrupt decrease of c by several orders just below T C suggest that the FM transition is discontinuous in nature. The application of pressure strongly decreases c , shifts MIT to higher temperature at the rate of 19 K / GPa, and suppresses the hysteresis width. The nature of the FM phase transition would change from discontinuous to continuous at around P = 2.5 GPa.
