The left lower back limb is missing, but this may be due to 53 disturbance, as it would have been the body part closest to the top of the pit. The excavators suggested that the whole feature seemed inconsistent with use as a rubbish pit and argued that the cow had been half butchered, but deposited before the butchery was finished, possibly for a 'ritual' function, although they do not expand the explanation further.…”
