Preserving Right Pre-motor and Posterior Prefrontal Cortices Contribute to Maintaining Overall Basic Emotion

Abstract: Basic emotions such as happiness, sadness, and anger are universal, regardless of the human species, and are governed by specific brain regions. A recent report revealed that mentalizing, which is the ability to estimate other individuals’ emotional states via facial expressions, can be preserved with the help of awake surgery. However, it is still questionable whether we can maintain the ability to understand others’ emotions by preserving the positive mapping sites of intraoperative assessment. Here, we demo… Show more

“…Research from this area offers compelling evidence that the assessment of the emotional experience of others is a function of the right hemisphere [ 66 , 67 ]. In particular, the identification of emotional facial expressions in others involves cortical structures in the right hemisphere [ 68 , 69 ], a process that is distinct from the identification of faces generally [ 70 ]. Yet, while it is likely that emotional appraisal is centered in the right hemisphere, the experience of emotion itself is likely more diffuse.…”

“…Although neuro-oncological studies suggest that surgical resections do not have a persistent detrimental effect on social cognition abilities, lesion mapping studies provide different results by showing degraded performances in social cognition abilities a few months after surgery. This discrepancy in results could be attributed to the fact that neuro-oncological studies typically do not employ a comprehensive array of neuroanatomical analyses (Nakajima et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Nakajima et al. related the premotor and posterior parts of the prefrontal cortices to various kinds of basic emotions, demonstrating that the preservation of a positive site is associated with basic emotion function preservation even in cases of transient decline after surgery ( 94 ).…”
