Presenting Safety Topics Using a Graphic Novel, Manga, To Effectively Teach Chemical Safety to Students in Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand

Abstract: Manga are graphic novels that are considered to have the potential to effectively convey concepts and engage readers. The efficacy of manga has been validated for chemical safety education to students in three universities in Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand. Students were asked to examine a photo to identify hazards and hazardous behaviors that can potentially lead to accidents before and after reading a manga that explains the risk of fires and explosions. The identified hazards/hazardous behaviors were classifie… Show more

“…Cartoons , and comic books can also illustrate chemical principles (e.g., microscale chemistry in Archie ’s comic book or general chemistry in Dick Tracy , DC Comics , or Marvel comics). Recently, lab safety rules have been presented to students with comics, graphic novels, and mangas . Beyond novels and comics, movies are currently one of the biggest providers of pop-culture. , The list of movies used to illustrate chemistry is impressive including for example Apollo 13 , October Sky , Star Trek , and many others. The omnipresent Marvel franchises often invoke various areas of chemistry and chemical engineering such as nanotechnology in the suits of Iron Man , properties of the fictional metal vibranium in Black Panther , the quantum realm in Ant-Man , or material sciences in Spider-Man .…”

“…3 Students made cartoons in an introductory course in organic chemistry to relate the diversity of carbonbased molecules to social diversity. 4 In the chemistry setting, it seems that relatively more attention has been given to existing cartoons for instructional purposes: for example, to present safety topics 5 and to learn the difference between a strong and weak acid. 6 The subject "chemistry in the comics" was used to initiate discussion of various aspect of chemistry.…”
